ABOUT CAPE TOWN CHESS FEDERATION
The Cape Town Chess League, one of the oldest in the world, has been a cornerstone of the city’s chess community for over 100 years. It began in 1907 when the Cape Town Chess Club, Tokai, Woodstock, and the YMCA formed the Western Province Union. Since then, it has grown into a thriving competition with four divisions, 78 teams, and 740 registered players. Despite South Africa’s complex history, chess has remained a unifying force in Cape Town, with players from all backgrounds continuing to participate.
In 1992, the league became unified after years of division during the apartheid era. Today, the Cape Town Chess Federation proudly carries forward this legacy, supporting both seasoned players and newcomers alike. The league has produced many champions over the years, with clubs like Blackjacks and Steinitz leading the way. As it continues to grow, the league remains a vital part of Cape Town’s sporting and cultural life, fostering a love for the game and bringing people together through chess.
